PRACTICAL INFORMATION >> Local transport

The streets in Korea can be a complicated web of twists and turns, causing much confusion to the first time visitor. Although all of Seoul¡¯s buildings have their proper addresses, few people use the actual street name or building number to identify the building. The easiest method of finding one¡¯s way around Seoul is to recall a prominent landmark near the destination. For example subway stations, historical sites, skyscrapers, apartment complexes, department stores, etc. Reciting this landmark to the taxi or bus driver, or the pedestrian on the street is the easiest way to find one¡¯s way around Seoul.

Subway

The subway is the most efficient and convenient way for visitors to find their way in Seoul. Station names, ticket counters, and transfer signs are all clearly marked in English as well as in Korean. All trains have announcements in English and Korean. Eight subway lines serve Seoul and its suburbs, and eight lines are color-coded: Navy blue for Line 1, green for Line 2, orange for Line 3, sky blue for Line 4, purple for Line 5, brown for line 6, military green for line 7, and pink for line 8. The basic fare is 600 won for one service area and 700 won for two service areas. Prepaid tickets or transportation smart cards are available for sale at the ticket counters or at booths near bus stops. The electric train grades fare by destination.

Buses

The bus systems differ slightly from city to city, but most cities have local and express buses. Although the buses are properly numbered, their signs are expressed in Korean only. Finding the right bus may be confusing to a first-time visitor. Please request assistance to find the relevant bus stop and number. The bus fare can be paid with coins, bills or transportation smart cards available at booths near bus stops.

Local City Buses :
Local buses are the most common means of transportation in Seoul. They are frequent, reliable, and inexpensive. Seoul's bus network serves every area of the city, and the adult fare is 600 won regardless of distance.

City Coach Buses :
City coach buses, or express buses (Jwaseok buses in Korean), are more comfortable but double the fare. Nonetheless they stop less frequently and travel through congested areas faster. The fares for the city coach buses and the new deluxe city express buses are 1,300 and 1,500 won respectively.

Taxis
Taxis are plentiful, clean, safe and inexpensive in Korea. Furthermore taxi stands can be found around all the city. Taxis can also be hailed on the streets. In addition, certain taxis can be requested by phone(82-2-3431-5100), although the fare for these special call taxis is higher than regular taxis. Most taxi drivers do not speak English, so it is advisable to tell him or her the names of the different landmarks near the desired destination. Vacant taxis have red indicator lamps near the front passenger seat and on the roof. Below is a rough sketch of the fares charged by local taxis:
